World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading
Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as crit chance and PvE Damage.

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the item's current level. The cost rises with item's level.
Components
Upgrade components are items that can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets to give an extra stat boost or effect while they're in use. They can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors trading or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components are only available to devices that have slots. The item must be at least upgraded to blue level before the component can be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and Enrichments are kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item are dependent on its rarity score and upgrade slot count. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equal to its base value. Premium items have different upgrade requirements as compared to standard equipment, for instance, they may require fewer sowels, but they will require more minerals and erons.
